What is the "winepress" in your life where you are hiding? That secret place where fear keeps you from stepping into what God has called you to do? Today, I want to share with you a story that will challenge everything you think you know about courage and calling.

The Scene of Fear and Oppression
Let me set the scene for you. In Judges 6:11-16, we find ourselves in a time when the Israelites were living under Midianite oppression due to their disobedience to God. The Midianites would invade and ravage the land, leaving Israel impoverished and desperate. Picture this: families hiding their food, their livelihood constantly under threat, living in constant fear of the next raid.
The story unfolds in Ophrah, under an oak where we meet our unlikely hero - Gideon. But here's what's remarkable: Gideon is secretly threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites. The air is thick with fear, and the atmosphere is tense with the threat of enemy raids. This wasn't normal - you thresh wheat on a hilltop where the wind can blow away the chaff. But Gideon was hiding, doing what should be done in the open, in secret.
The Divine Interruption
Then comes the divine interruption. The Angel of the Lord appears and calls Gideon a "mighty warrior." Can you imagine? Here's a man hiding in fear, and God calls him a mighty warrior! This wasn't sarcasm - this was prophecy. God wasn't describing who Gideon was; He was declaring who Gideon would become.
But Gideon's response reveals his heart: he expresses doubt and questions God's presence. Sound familiar? How many times have we questioned whether God is really with us when circumstances seem overwhelming?
God's Promise and Our Inadequacy
Here comes the turning point - the climax of our story. The Angel of the Lord assures Gideon of God's presence and calls him to save Israel with this incredible promise: "I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive" (Judges 6:16).
This reveals the most significant theological insight of Gideon's story: the assurance of God's presence and power in the face of overwhelming odds. Here's what I want you to understand: God does not call the equipped; He equips the called.
Gideon requests a sign to confirm his calling - and you know what? God graciously provides it. Our God understands our human frailty and meets us in our moments of doubt.
From Winepress to Battlefield
The story relates to modern-day issues of feeling inadequate or overwhelmed by life's challenges. It speaks to those who doubt their ability to make a difference or feel small in the face of great obstacles. Maybe you're in your own winepress today - that place where you're hiding from what God has called you to do.
Gideon's story teaches us about the power of God's call, the courage to step out in faith, and the assurance that God is with us even when we feel inadequate. Remember that God uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary purposes.
Putting It Into Practice
I challenge you to identify an area in your life where you feel called but hesitant. Here are three practical steps you can take:
Step Out in Faith: Trust in God's calling and strength rather than your own limitations. Your inadequacy is not a disqualification - it's an invitation for God's power to be displayed.
Seek God's Presence: In moments of fear and uncertainty, remember that the same God who promised to be with Gideon promises to be with you.
Take Action This Week: Commit to taking a step of faith this week, trusting in God's promise to be with you. It doesn't have to be big - just faithful.
As you leave here today, reflect on this question: "What is the 'winepress' in my life where I am hiding, and how can I step out into the light of God's calling with courage?" Your winepress might be the very place where God wants to meet you and call you to something greater than you ever imagined.
